Our team is closely monitoring the media cycle right now around the attack at the Capitol and are pulling insights as well as an analysis report that is forthcoming.
Language is rapidly changing through this morning, based on our tracking these are the topline insights:
- The media cycle transitioned their language from protesters to rioters to insurrection at around 3:06 P.M. EST yesterday via broadcast with the moniker “pro-Trump mob” starting to trend starting around 8:00 P.M. EST last night online;
- We found that broadcast yesterday was lagging behind all afternoon around 15-25 minutes as the stories developed; and
- And the 25th Amendment conversation/chatter began around 3:37 P.M. EST with the release of the National Association of Manufacturers statement.
In the aftermath of yesterday’s attack at the Capitol, outlets are reporting that four people have died. D.C. officials said today that one woman was shot inside the Capitol building by a Capitol Police Officer, and three others died after separate medical emergencies. 14 police officers were injured as well, and two remain hospitalized as of this morning.
Congress reconvened after the Capitol was secured last night, and resumed the process of certifying the Electoral College vote at 8 P.M. EST. In the early hours of this morning, Congress officially certified the election results. President Trump issued a statement through surrogates saying that “there will be an orderly transition on January 20th.”
In further notable news from this week, both Democratic Candidates, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, won in Georgia’s Senate runoff elections, giving Democrats full control of Congress. President-elect Joe Biden announced he will nominate Judge Merrick Garland, whose Supreme Court nomination Republicans blocked in 2016, to be Attorney General.
